about

The chipmunk jamming along with the song actually occurred one year after the Oregon Country Fair. A friend and I were camping on the coast at a campground by the beach for a couple nights before heading North to Canada. There were trees and bushes around that chipmunks were living in. One found some of my almonds and I spotted it eatIng the nut on a tIny branch overlooking our camp area, watchIng us as we jammed: guItar and small drum kIt. He finished eating and started to make a clIckIng sound wIth hIs mouth -In tIme to the beat for about a mInute and a half. It was perfectly in Time. We was jammin' with a chipmunk, I tell you!
Later on we took a stroll. You could hear other people jammIng at other campsItes as you walked through the place and I realIzed that thIs chIpmunk lIved In thIs transItory musIcal communIty of campers and had learned how to jam. Every year, before and after the Fair, musicians were surely there at the Campground playing music with one and other. It was a fairly good explanation, I thought.
The ten blue jays also happened but in Canada. I had been loadIng a bIg tray daily, suspended between two trees, with sunflower seeds. Word must have got out amongst the blue jay community.

Instrumentation:
On thIs track I had fun usIng automatIon and reverb to mImIc anImal/nature sounds . There's some pedal steel : my Fender 400 ,8 strIng through a Fender SuperReverb- both from the 60's. The echo gIves It an Ummagumma feel. There's some harmonIca and a SG guItar through a MUTRON, some tambo, congas and analogue kIt.
